 About Toby
making music sound good

Toby Tittle is a sound engineer working at the intersection of all genres of music.

Whether it's mixing for Pink Martini, Wyclef Jean, Ozomatli, Stevie Wonder, monitor engineering at the prestigious Ojai Music Festival, or sound designing for Camerata Pacifica, Metropolis Ensemble, or USC, Toby Tittle's work stands out for his ability to adapt across genre, style, and function.

Toby cut his teeth as an engineer in Los Angeles' diverse music scene getting his first lessons from his sound-engineer father while absorbing the beautiful sounds of his mother's keyboard playing at home and at church.

Today, he is sought after for his versatility, seamlessly shifting between the worlds of hip-hop, to baroque, and everything in between.

He has found a niche in Symphonic Pops shows. Mixing for many top tier artists as they challenge themselves to integrate their music live with full symphonies. Artists such as Wyclef Jean, Nelly, and The Roots have introduced symphony shows with Toby mixing. He has also mixed many touring tribute shows for the music of Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Journey, Tony Bennett, and many more.

Sound Design is always an element of sound engineering. But Toby is an engineer that works in creative ways, always conscious of visual aesthetic concerns as well as specific requests of artists he is working with. Familiar with all kinds of audio processing and well versed in surround and immersive audio techniques, he is capable of keeping sounds as natural as possible or wild as you would want.

When he's not on the road working with artists and venues around the world, Toby can be found at home in Los Angeles working at venues including The Broad Stage, Luckman Fine Arts Complex, SOKA Performing Arts Center, and more....

Encouraging and educating the next generation of artists and engineers has been central. Toby can be found working with USC Thornton School pop students as they hone their skills, helping them to understand all of the elements needed to bring their visions to life through their performance showcases. At the Ojai Music Festival, he manages the audio interns, facilitating their understanding of audio production for contemporary classical music. And he takes pride in passing on knowledge and helping build networks for young and/or new audio professionals.

From 2009 to 2019 he was the head of sound for the acclaimed Los Angeles non-profit concert presenter Grand Performances, working with artists including Stevie Wonder, La Santa Cecilia, Haim, Ana Tijoux, Rufus, DJ Nu-Mark, DakhaBrakha, Kamasi Washington, Alfredo Rodriguez, Bootsy Collins, and many more.

In addition to his work bringing music to life, Toby is also the go-to person for sound design, live mixing, and more for USC Special Events. Whether designing the systems, and making sure everything runs smoothly for USC's main commencement celebration with 65,000 attendees, to managing sound for USC's Board of Trustees, showing the flexibility to mange corporate event style sound solutions and system design as well.
